It’s generally great and fun and collaborative. One issue is there’s a dancing frog which shares its likeness with Pepe the alt right frog. Pepe is, obviously, a totem that is synonymous with hate speech. Unfortunately my HR rep in the office has taken to using this dancing frog in her office correspondence. All the f’ing time. I am confident she doesn’t know what Pepe is or represents, as she is not particularly culturally up to date. She thinks it’s just a celebratory dancing frog. Our company, however, is a very internet savvy digital media agency so EVERYONE ELSE knows exactly what it is. ![]() I really am uncomfortable when she uses the Pepe, as it seriously dampers conversations. I want to let her know but I don’t want her to think I’m being condescending or pretentious. I also don’t want her to think it is a political thing as I am outspokenly against the current administration and I’m not confident that she feels the same. ![]() It’s a hate symbol thing. I would go to HR with it, but she is HR. I’m seriously baffled by what to do, though it may seem trivial. It would actually be more awkward if she did know the story behind the symbol — although speaking up about it would still be the right thing to do (even more so, in fact). But in this case, since she genuinely doesn’t know, you’ll be filling her in on something that a reasonable person would be grateful to know. And even if she’s not a reasonable person, it’s still a valid thing for you to point out. You could just say this: “I’m pretty sure that you don’t realize that that dancing frog emoji is identical to a symbol that has become associated with racism, anti- semitism, and other hate speech. I know that’s not how you’re intending it, but given that it’s become so strongly associated with those things, I figured you wouldn’t want to keep sending it out in company correspondence!”If she seems skeptical, you could add, “The Anti- Defamation League added it to its database of hate symbols last year.”That should be enough to take care of it. But if for some reason it isn’t, the next time she sends something out with the frog on it, I’d hope you could get others on your staff to add their voices to yours too, so that the chorus of people telling her to knock it off is louder. ![]() Deep Root Analytics, a conservative data firm that identifies audiences for political ads, confirmed ownership of the data to Gizmodo on Friday. Bring your blankie. Don’t get us wrong: the full- length movie is still a verifiable pants- pooper. Imagine: You and your twin brother live in the Austrian/Czech countryside, which is beautiful but so remote that even the sweet summer breezes are creepy. Then, your mom leaves you there, in your big, empty house, completely alone. Then, she comes home, but her face is covered in bandages, her eyes all bloodshot. Then, you wonder, what if this isn’t really my mom, just someone pretending to be my mom? Scary, indeed. The difference between the trailer and the movie, though? In the film, you get a resolution. Yes, that resolution is certifiably fucked. But at least you get one. The trailer version instead gives you all the makings of a nightmare—cockroaches, masks, fires, mirrors—but without ever getting to the part where you wake up. Clay Skipper. The scariest thing about Robert Eggers' The Witch is that nothing is a metaphor; the goat in the yard actually is Satan, and the titular witch is not a figment of a colonial town’s nightmares—she’s a scary crone who lives in the forest. The Witch is more like spooky folklore than horror, validating Puritan fears about evil. But there’s an eeriness that lingers long after the movie’s over, and you won't even jump out of your seat. Unless you are, in fact, a Puritan. Lauren Larson. The scariest part of this 2. Australian horror film isn’t the monster. It’s the feeling that the shadowy monster might actually be real.. We know they’re being exploited for sensationalism’s sake, but that’s how they earned a living in those rubbernecking times; in its opportunistic, semi- documentary way, Tod Browning’s film preserved a carny subculture that nobody belonged to by choice. But it’s actually a rare example of a fiendishly efficient all- ages horror movie, blending the stuff that frightens kids (thunderstorms, monsters in the closet, clown dolls) with the stuff that frightens mortgage- holders (children in peril, sudden collapses in property values, clown dolls). It’s effectively a war movie about a family defending itself against an uprising of lost souls, and part of its genius is that the battlefield isn’t, say, a creaky Gothic mansion or a haunted hotel complex in winter but a cookie- cutter suburban- California house where even the most mundane objectsthe TV set, chairs around the kitchen tablecan be recruited to the dark side. Jessica Winter. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY SCARE O. SIMPSON? You want to have fun while you’re being scared. Like a roller. coaster ride, your heart should be in your mouth but you need to be. The biggest Oh my God!- scary movie is Alien. I. watched it at an industry screening two rows behind O. I would’ve been embarrassed if Simpson hadn’t jumped much. If it could scare the Juice, I was okay. It still causes major problems in my personal relationship with Joshua Leonard, one of the movie’s stars. I have a hard time being around him whenever he’s facing a corner. Like, We can hang out; you just gotta stay in the middle of the fucking room, dude. That image was ingrained in my subconscious forever. The feeling behind the movie was very realistic. Something about the way the movie is shot, with the lo- fi camera, gave a bit of intimacy to it all. It was just unique and unsettling. There was no thinking; it was mostly just urinating. Mark Duplass, Actor/Filmmaker. Holy crap, The Exorcist (1. I was 1. 4 when I saw it, permanently scarred for life. Thereafter, for many years, I wouldn’t, couldn’t, be left alone in a room at night. My bad dreams revolved around scenes in the movie, of green puke and the voice of Beelzebub, saying really really inappropriate stuff. If I became feverish, I was pretty sure it was Pazuzuthe evil spirit who inhabits Linda Blaircome to mess me up. And Ouija boards? But the real horror is the horrible realization that darkness may really win out over good, that our universe is bursting at the seams with violence and entropy. It’s the horror of a really sweet, loving, decent kidjust like all of us, for fuck’s sake! It’s the horror of possession and the proximity of chaos and a glimmer of that unconscious force that might unravel all of us. The Exorcist is a game of chicken for our souls, and you know from early on, that someone’s gonna end up dead. You just keeping hoping it won’t be you. Michael Paterniti. Easily the most traumatizing aspect of The Omen (1. It’s a noisy film replete with bloodcurdling screamsbut what really gets under your skin is the cacophony of dog attacks, baboon creeches, and sheer ghoulishness of happy kids shrieking and then going silent for the ropy recoil of a noose. Zero suspension of disbelief required. It’s like a Hitchcock moviebrilliant and so simple. A guy and his pregnant wife go on vacation to this island off the coast of Spain; they get there, and the adults are gone. Just very, very creepy kids. They realize that something infected the kids and they all went crazy, killed the adults. So he’s got to defend himself, but how do you kill a 3- year- old kid? Like, you can’t. It’s your instinct to protect children, but these are amazing killer kids. There’s a scene where they’re trapped in a jail cell, and they look up, and there’s a 3- year- old, and he’s got a gun and starts pointing it at the couple in the jail cell. And the kid’s just smiling. Totally nuts. Eli Roth, Writer/Director, Hostel, Cabin Fever. The films that have really scared me give me the feeling that whoever made it is dangerous and crazy. Like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1. I really, literally, thought that was made by a Manson Family- like group in Texas somewhere. As a filmmaker, you have to cross those lines, as I did in my first couple of films to the point where people spurned my company. The audience has to feel like the director is dangerous: He crossed lines he shouldn’t cross, and he might put anything up on the screen. Wes Craven, Filmmaker, Scream series, A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Last House On The Left. David Lynch taps into something unexplainable. Like the scene in Mulholland Dr. It’s one of the scariest scenes ever committed to film, but it shouldn’t be. Nothing about that scene should be scary at all. Lynch is able to tap into something that’s scary for human beings: fear of the unknown. A big clich about Lynch is that his films are dreamlike, but it’s true. Dreams follow weird logic. Lynch’s films are like that: feels like a nightmare. Leigh Whannell, Writer, Saw and Insidious series. The Brian De Palma film stars Margot Kidder, in French- Canadian lushness. And there’s a phenomenal mad doctor played by William Finley. He’s like a giant sweating grasshopper. It’s just an incredible performance; he literally cuts the Siamese twins in half so that he can fuck one of them. That’s what he’s after. I would love to see it correctly projected, although I’m sure there’s a Blu- ray out. It would look great on a fifty- inch flat- screen with curvature in the goddamn man cave.** Robert Englund, Actor (Freddy Krueger)**I jumped up and ran screaming to the back of the theater but eventually sat back down, because I was fascinated. Horrified, but fascinated. I saw It Came from Outer Space (1. D, which was not a good thing for a young kid. A meteor (we find out later it’s a spaceship) streaks across the desert night sky. Cut to an angle where the burning ball of fire comes hurtling straight into the camera and explodes. I didn’t understand anything. Why is this meteor blowing up in my face? Horror works best when you’re young, when we have these imaginations that are still very active. As you get older, your knowledge of your own limits, and of death, sometimes takes away from horror’s appeal. John Carpenter, Creator, Halloween. The reason I made Young Frankenstein was because when I was 5 or 6 years old, I was scared out of my wits by James Whale’s Frankenstein. I could not get images of Boris Karloff’s face out of my head. I would see him in every alley and around every dark corner. One very hot night in July, I asked my mother to close my bedroom window. In Brooklyn in 1. I explained that Frankenstein (that is what we mistakenly called The Monster) was out to get me! And since my bedroom window was on the fire escape, it would be easy for him to climb up and crush me like a bug. My mother patiently explained that he would have to crawl out of his burning cellar in Transylvania and find the money to buy a railway ticket to get a train to take him to Hamburg. American Horror Story: Asylum - Wikipedia. American Horror Story: Asylum is the second season of the American FXhorror television series American Horror Story, created by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy. It originally aired from October 1. January 2. 3, 2. 01. The premise of the second season marked a departure from that of the series' first season, featuring all new characters and a new location, thus marking American Horror Story as an anthology series at the time. The season begins in 1. Briarcliff Manor, following the stories of the staff and inmates who occupy it, and intercuts with events in the past and present. Returning cast members from the previous season of the series include: Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, Dylan Mc. Dermott, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Zachary Quinto, and Lily Rabe. Like its predecessor, Asylum was well received by television critics and fans. The performances of Jessica Lange, James Cromwell, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe were particularly praised. The season garnered seventeen Primetime Emmy Award nominations, more than any other show, including Outstanding Miniseries or Movie and four acting nominations for Lange, Paulson, Cromwell, and Quinto, with Cromwell winning for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. In addition, Quinto and Paulson won their respective supporting categories at the 3rd Critics' Choice Television Awards. Despite being formerly anthological, some of the cast members reprise their roles in the series' fourth and sixth cycle, Freak Show and Roanoke, such as: Lily Rabe, Naomi Grossman, Sarah Paulson, and James Cromwell, portraying Sister Mary Eunice Mc. Kee, Pepper, Lana Winters, and a young version of Dr. Arthur Arden, also known as Hans Gr. Psychiatrist Dr. Oliver Thredson (Zachary Quinto), and scientist Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell), treat the patients within the facility, which include lesbian journalist Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson), accused serial killer Kit Walker (Evan Peters), and alleged murderer Grace Bertrand (Lizzie Brocher. Sister Jude is terrorized by the memory and goes to see the family of the dead girl, only to learn that the girl survived the accident with only a few broken bones. She figures that God had a plan for her all along, and decides that it is her job to destroy all the remaining evil at Briarcliff. Sister Mary Eunice is a shy and innocent nun who fears Sister Jude, and becomes possessed by the Devil during an exorcism of another patient, becoming cruel and willful. Dr. Arden is a former Nazi whose experiments have produced . Thredson is assigned to evaluate Kit, who is accused of being the infamous serial killer 'Bloody Face' and believes his wife Alma (Britne Oldford) was abducted by aliens. Thredson also tries to . She was in a relationship with Wendy (Clea Duvall), who was blackmailed by Sister Jude into committing Winters, before being killed by Bloody Face. Thredson helps Lana escape from the asylum, but she learns that Thredson is actually Bloody Face, and is kept prisoner. He rapes her and tries to kill her, but she manages to escape, only to end up back at Briarcliff. She later learns she is pregnant with Thredson's baby. Meanwhile, believing his wife is dead or missing, Kit has taken up with inmate Grace Bertrand, who has murdered her family as her father was sexually abusive towards her and her stepmother ignored it. Kit is arrested after Thredson hands in a taped confession that he tricked Kit into saying and Grace is taken to be sterilized after the pair are caught having sex. However, she is abducted by aliens and is later returned, very pregnant and ready to give birth. Kit escapes custody and returns to Briarcliff, where he blackmails the Monsignor into letting Grace, himself, and their baby go. The three arrive at his old home to find his wife Alma, alive and with her own baby. The possessed Sister Mary Eunice, with the help of Dr. Arden, has Sister Jude deposed and committed, and takes over Briarcliff. Monsignor Howard tries to exorcise her but instead is sexually assaulted by her. Out of options, Howard kills her by throwing her off the third floor balcony, and Dr. Arden, having become loyal to Mary Eunice, cremates her while immolating himself. Lana successfully captures a confession from Dr. Thredson, but decides to confront him in his house to say she has turned the tape over to the police. He states that because he is insane, no jury will convict him and that she will be his last victim. As he reaches for a hidden gun, Lana shoots him in the head. In the present, Lana has become a famous television investigative reporter and gets Briarcliff closed down for its inhumane treatments. Lana reveals that Monsignor Howard committed suicide after she threatened to expose his neglect of the patients, and that Kit took in Sister Jude after Alma was committed to Briarcliff for killing Grace. Jude spends her remaining years bonding with Kit's children, before dying, leaving the family devastated. Kit also develops pancreatic cancer and is abducted by the aliens again. Lana and Thredson's grown son, Johnny (Dylan Mc. Dermott), has vowed vengeance against her, angry at being rejected as a baby and wanting to finish his father's work. He confronts her at her house, where she ultimately convinces him that he is not like his father, before taking his gun and shooting him in the head. Cast and characters. The second season of the show will be a brand- new home or building to haunt. Just like this year, every season of this show will have a beginning, middle and end. It will obviously be in America, but in a completely different locale.“”– Executive producer Ryan Murphy on American Horror Story's second season. In December 2. 01. Ryan Murphy announced his plans to change the characters and location for the second season. People who are coming back will be playing entirely new characters. It was never very definitive but I always liked that idea. I think an insane asylum for us was probably much more effective. The second season is set in a completely different time period. The sets are amazing. It's 1. 96. 4, so everything looks very different. This is our version of a workplace drama. We are designing this amazing new opposite of the Constance character for her. She and I have spoken about different things. She has a lot of ideas, and has a lot of input into her character. She told me some things she has always wanted to play as an actress. Zachary Quinto, who had a recurring role as Chad in the first season, was confirmed as one of the leads in March 2. Oliver Thredson, a psychiatrist with groundbreaking treatment methods that go against Sister Jude's. Comparing his new character to his previous one, Quinto said, . Murphy had stated that Peters, ! Every time Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios' screenplay warns its characters and the viewer against buying the notion that war is a test of mettle—an activity that turns boys into men and shrouds them in glory whether they survive or not—it follows up with a scene of Connor digging a well all by himself, brawling with four Turks in an alley, eluding would- be captors by climbing across rooftops, galloping into the film's climax astride a noble steed, or otherwise carrying on like John Wayne in God's Humble Gift mode. The film's fuzzy mystical undertones are irksome as well. They seem. less aligned with 1. Christian or Muslim. This feels less like. Crowe's compatriot Peter Weir managed in so many great films, including . That would be less troubling if . This seems like one of the biggest tactical errors in film release history when you think about how . He shows up a rules- obsessed British officer (Dan Wyllie) who tries to keep him away from the battlefield, enjoys a rejuvenating (though thankfully chaste) romance with a widowed Turkish woman half his age (Olga Kurylenko's Ayshe), and becomes a surrogate dad to her adorable son Orhan (Dylan Georgiades). The Armenian genocide—which began on the same day that ANZAC forces landed—is never mentioned. That all this should serve mainly as backdrop to a brawny man's journey of heroic healing, with its echoes of . But here, too, . Crowe's staging of violence alternates between detached scrutiny of unforgivable suffering and a video- game amazement at the harm weapons inflict on flesh. The film enfolds many conflicts within its handsome widescreen canvas—East vs. West. the Ottoman Empire vs. It should have been no contest. We kept in touch since then and got to hang out again in 2. California to visit an Ethiopian that was imprisoned. Afterwards we went to Yoga Mandala in Berkeley for their 1st anniversary yoga session which was my first ever yoga class!! After that day I was a regular student at that studio till I left the Bay Area and have been hooked on yoga ever since! Thank you Don!!!! Fast forward a few years and I was living in Addis for a couple of years and had the honor to help Don with administrative staff – organizing meetings, meet and greet events etc. I also had the privilege to organize a meeting for him with Gash Mesfin (Prof. Mesfin), who had also been recently released from prison. It was an awesome opportunity for me to sit amongst these two giants and listen- in to their conversation, debate and old stories. I have driven with Gash Liben to Awasa to check out AYC’s overall progress as well as the setup of the dojo and saw him in action in his beloved Aikido. It was a pleasure to be around Don and to see him interact with ease with the young, not so young, important officials/diplomats and not so important people attentively and with respect! Interestingly I found out that my Dad was an undergrad student at AAU when Don first came to Ethiopia and was one of the people that taught him Amharic. I’m glad they got to hang out after so many years in Chicago when my Dad was visiting, and again in Addis when Don visited last. Don is a true sensei in the whole sense of the word!! From Mel Tewahade. Denver, Colorado. Don Levine (second from right) with Menze family in Amhara region of Ethiopia. The God that created heaven and earth is pleased in this Easter day, to receive his servant and our friend into his kingdom. May his writing and teaching touch many lives forever and ever. He has willingly accepted and loved being Ethiopian. He dedicated 5. 5 years of his life studying, writing, teaching, advocating and praying for Ethiopia and Ethiopians. He encouraged all of us to dig deeper into the spirit of Menze and Shoa. He also showed us to live our lives with abundance. He reminded me that Queen of Sheba took gold and incense when she visited King Solomon in Jerusalem. He motivated us to develop our skill of negotiation that our ancestors had once mastered. He showed us how to express what we want with class and dignity using what our ancestors called Wax and Gold. He wanted to show Ethiopians not to be ashamed of our history and heritage. For that alone I am eternally grateful. Gashe Liben, as he is called by his Ethiopian name, We will continue your work and be true to ourselves. May you rest in peace. From Elias Wondimu, Founder of TSEHAI Publishers. Los Angeles, California(Courtesy of Tsehai Publishers)I was blessed enough to work with Gash Liben on several initiatives. To mention a few, he was an editorial advisor and author of TSEHAI Publishers, editorial board member and regular contributor of the International Journal of Ethiopian Studies, and a founding board member and senior scholar of the Ethiopian Institute for Nonviolence Education and Peace Studies, but most of all he was one of the few people who took time to answer any questions that I may have. For me, I lost a mentor, a major supporter, and a collaborator on all of my projects, and an author extraordinaire that I had the privilege of publishing his very last book (Interpreting Ethiopia) among other writings and his classic book: Wax and Gold. The reaction of our people from across international borders is not due to one or few of his successful writings, but it is due to his life- long engagement with Ethiopia and his advocacy to her citizens’ dignity wherever they might be. What we lost today is not only an acclaimed scholar, but a dear friend of our people and a citizen of the world who cares deeply for its future. Hold on to what is good,” was known to Professor Levine since his time as a Professor in the then Haile Selassie I University over fifty years ago. The motto became part of our conversation as we marched to Genet Hall. This anecdote typifies the nature and personality of Professor Levine and his extraordinary immersion into Ethiopian history, culture and society. Professor Levine has always maintained an insider view, that is, he studied the language, assumed the position of being empathic with the culture and looked at the history and culture of the people Ethiopia from the inside out. Professor Levine was so intimate with the field of Ethiopian Studies that he was able to produce, as most agree, two outstanding and classical books on aspects of Ethiopian culture and society: Wax and Gold: Tradition and Innovation in Ethiopian Culture (1. Greater Ethiopia: The Evolution of Multiethnic Society (1. These two books are by far widely quoted and referenced works in the field of Ethiopian Studies. This is an earned name. He earned the most gracious and affectionate title as a result of his remarkable accessibility to Ethiopians and their organizations, be it in social, cultural, educational and political settings. Gashe Liben prefaced many books authored by Ethiopian or Ethiopianist scholars. He organized international conferences and gave many media interviews. Gashe Liben helped several Ethiopians with their immigration cases. He always cautioned fellow Ethiopians to seize the moment and get engaged with the modernization of Ethiopia informed by tradition. He urged us to stop missing opportunities. To me, Professor Levine’s seminal contribution in the field of Ethiopian Studies was his definition and articulation of what he calls the Ethiopian national epic. The professor argued that Kebre Negest is a national epic or mythology. True, the mythology has to be expanded and should include the multiple mythologies of our people. But as a tribute to Professor Levine, we should all agree that our multiethnic identity is founded on a great epic of a great people. From Kidist Tariku, Coordinator of Ethiopia’s Long Live the Girls program. Hawassa, Ethiopia. We are very sad to lose such a loving and intelligent man. His name and work always remains in our organization’s history. He is our founder; he will always be respected and loved for what he did for our community. May his soul rest in peace. Long Live the Girls is a girls’ empowerment program through creative writing initiative founded in 2. Action for Youth & Community Change & Break Arts: International Arts & Education Collaborative. Using creative writing to spark the imagination and see the world as if it could be otherwise, our model for engagement is unique — we create safe spaces for girls and women to speak and write with freedom, often using both political and poetic documents as the springboard for conversation, writing & performance. Vestal. Professor Emeritus, Oklahoma State University Ted Vestal. His books about Ethiopia, especially Wax and Gold and Greater Ethiopia, are classical studies of the society, history, and culture of the Land of Prester John that so fascinated him. His many articles and public addresses about Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa leave a profound legacy for Ethiopians to ponder in the years to come. His thoughts about Ethiopia and prescriptions for its future were informed by his life as superbly trained American academic and public intellectual. Don came to Chicago fresh out of high school and took advantage of the University of Chicago’s accelerated degree program begun during the university’s presidency of Robert Hutchins. In a seven year span from 1. B. A., M. A., and Ph. D. He resided in a rural Manz, an Amhara area and learned firsthand about the people and their ways. He studied Amharic and could converse with the subjects of his research. He then became a professor at Haile Selassie I University where he was teaching during the attempted coup in 1. Levine joined the faculty at his alma mater, the University of Chicago, in 1. Professor of Sociology and holder of the endowed Peter B. Ritzma chair. He also served as Dean of the College in the 1. Levine’s teaching, speaking, and writing about Ethiopia reflected his grounding in the Chicago method of higher education characterized by independent thought and criticism that is created in the interest of the progress of society. In his continuing dialogue with and about Ethiopia, Don was open- minded and welcomed different points of view. In the process of doing this, he extended the bounds of understanding and wisdom about that ancient land. He epitomized the great professor of cultural studies: one who lived and worked among the people, took part in their festivals and celebrations, learned the language, and studied the literature and great books of their tradition. Exposure. 10. 1. 2 Hazard identification. Dose. PREVIOUS EVALUATIONS BY INTERNATIONAL BODIESREFERENCESAPPENDIX 1 . CICADs join the Environmental Health Criteria documents (EHCs) as authoritative documents on the risk assessment of chemicals. International Chemical Safety Cards on the relevant chemical(s) are attached at the end of the CICAD, to provide the reader with concise information on the protection of human health and on emergency action. They are produced in a separate peer- reviewed procedure at IPCS. They may be complemented by information from IPCS Poison Information Monographs (PIM), similarly produced separately from the CICAD process. CICADs are concise documents that provide summaries of the relevant scientific information concerning the potential effects of chemicals upon human health and/or the environment. They are usually based on selected national or regional evaluation documents or on existing EHCs. Before acceptance for publication as CICADs by IPCS, these documents undergo extensive peer review by internationally selected experts to ensure their completeness, accuracy in the way in which the original data are represented, and the validity of the conclusions drawn. The primary objective of CICADs is characterization of hazard and dose. CICADs are not a summary of all available data on a particular chemical; rather, they include only that information considered critical for characterization of the risk posed by the chemical. The critical studies are, however, presented in sufficient detail to support the conclusions drawn. For additional information, the reader should consult the identified source documents upon which the CICAD has been based. Risks to human health and the environment will vary considerably depending upon the type and extent of exposure. Responsible authorities are strongly encouraged to characterize risk on the basis of locally measured or predicted exposure scenarios. To assist the reader, examples of exposure estimation and risk characterization are provided in CICADs, whenever possible. These examples cannot be considered as representing all possible exposure situations, but are provided as guidance only. The reader is referred to EHC 1.
