Star Recap Season 1 Episode 8. Alex & Derek The MVP couple of this show (not like there's much competition, but still) are struggling to find common ground when Derek is in jail. Though Alex (Ryan Destiny) quickly gets out of her . The activist tells Alex that he might take the plea deal, despite being innocent of the crime — the odds are already stacked against him. Alex can't fathom that, to the level where she's not sure she even wants to be with Derek anymore. That lasts about 3. Derek and Alex are the light of this show and need to be endgame. After the block party money comes up short, Alex asks her mom for the rest, manipulating her into thinking she'll come back to New York City if she fronts the cash. She does, but Alex stays firmly planted in Atlanta, despite her mom's warning that Derek will break her heart. Probably, but who cares when they look at one another like that? Jahil & Eva Once upon a time, Jahil was a hero of this show. Alas, that ride- or- die Jahil — the one who declared he'd do anything to make Star's dreams come true — is gone. He and Eva are now very much a couple —despite Jahil telling everyone that Eva was his niece, ew — and suddenly he's way more invested in making her famous than keeping Star happy. That's fine — Star can be knocked down a few pegs, and probably should be — but even Star doesn't deserve to be manipulated like this by her own manager. Does Jahil care about Star, even a little bit? It's no wonder that Star quits Big Trouble in the final moments of the episode, after Jahil insists on making Eva their fourth member. Transfer interrupted! By a series of chances, they discover who this man is, and Olivia informs the Sheriff. Later, the man, Son Slater, accosts Olivia with. In tonight’s new episode of Game of Thrones, the siege of Riverrun came to an end, and no one was safe. Spoiler Note: This post is for those who have read the A. But also — can you really blame Star? Carlotta & Cotton I know we're supposed to love Carlotta, but she's not my mama bear. When Cotton brings home her new boyfriend Elliot (Jack Yang) Carlotta immediately accuses Cotton of bringing a pimp into her house.
Not only is Elliot not a pimp (or, at least, isn't Cotton's pimp — we don't know much about this mysterious guy), he's also incredibly understanding when Cotton tells him that she was born a man, and still has a penis. Carlotta and Cotton get into it, and Carlotta straight- up slaps her across the face. If Cotton had a drink in her hand, I would have hoped it would be across Carlotta's face by now. Later, Pastor Bobby — who hasn't been the most . Instead, Bobby demands that Cotton own her male identity and birth name Arnold, leaving the poor woman in tears. That's too much for even Carlotta, who kicks Bobby out of the house. Later, we see Bobby sobbing over his bible, declaring that he's . Cotton is appropriately traumatized by Bobby's behavior and runs up to her room, grabs a gun, and puts it to her temple. She may have pulled the trigger, had it not been for the (finally helpful!) Star, who distracts Cotton by telling her there's no way she's cleaning blood off of those glitter curtains. Eventually, the friends collapse on Cotton's bed, laughing, and it makes me realize that maybe Star isn't the worst after all. Star & Hunter. At the request of Alex and Simone (Brittany O'Grady), Star asks Hunter (Chad James Buchanan) to make a serious donation to Derek's fund. She tries to play it cool — she knows how pissed Hunter and his mother got last time she went on a shopping spree with his credit card — but Hunter blows up. It's frightening, and completely knocks the football player off any pedestol the show has put him on. During their argument — in which Star tells him to go buy his mom another tanning bed instead — Hunter slaps Star across the face. While it's a shocking act, it's not an unprecedented one. Hunter threw her phone into traffic, breaking it, in the last episode. Seeing the potential for abuse here is disturbing. Star walks, and my heart breaks for her. Star, Alex, and Simone perform TLC's . That surprise is Pumpkin — better known to everyone in the real world as Missy Elliot. The famous music producer, who just so happens to be longtime buds with Carlotta, isn't enough to get Star to forgive Hunter, and rightfully so. Find listings of daytime and primetime ABC TV shows, movies and specials. Get links to your favorite show pages. Hunter needs serious help — and needs to quit these performance- enhancing drugs, if he hasn't already — but that doesn't mean Star should stick around. This girl may not be warm and fuzzy, but she's been hurt by too many people to let Hunter get away with it. It won't be long before the cops put two and two together and come for Star and Simone. But who really killed Otis? We're no closer to solving that mystery, but my money is still on Cotton. Read These Next: Star Recap Season 1, Episode 7. Paris Jackson To Appear On Star. And because the Shadow King managed to destroy the imaginary coffin where David isolated him with the help of Cary’s (Bill Irwin) device at the very end of last episode, it looks like next week’s finale will feature a showdown between David and the parasitic mutant living inside him. But it seems that this battle against the Shadow King won’t be a solo mission for David. As seen in the trailer for the episode, it appears that Team Summerland end up working with the Division Three to help David in his battle against the Shadow King. Will this device ultimately help David get rid of the Shadow King? Only time will tell. What the Tesla big battery can and cannot do : Renew. Economy. There’s been a lot of discussion about the Tesla big battery since the company announced last Friday that it would build a 1. MW/1. 29. MWh lithium- ion battery storage installation – the world’s biggest – after winning the state government tender. The battery will be owned and operated by French renewable energy developer Neoen (which stands for “new energy”), and will be located right next to the 3. MW Hornsdale wind farm currently being completed near Jamestown. But what exactly is it? And what can it do? And how much will it cost? We try to answer some of the main questions, and dispel some of the myths. How big is it? At 1. MW/1. 29. MWh it is the biggest lithium- ion battery storage installation in the world. As Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk says, it will be three times larger than the next biggest (although bigger ones are on the way). Why is storage needed? Two reasons – grid stability, and managing varying renewables like wind and solar. Imagine a brick wall built without insufficient cement to keep it together. That’s probably a pretty good analogy for how our ageing grid, with its slow moving machines, operates at the moment. Battery storage can be the glue that helps keep it together, mostly through incredibly fast response to system faults – such as transmission failures and tripping gas plants that can make the grid sway like a drunk walking down the road. And storage will also be able to smooth the output of wind and solar, and allow those operators to store excess output for use at times of peak demand, or when the sun is not needed and the wind is not blowing. What can this array do? Battery storage can do a bunch of different things – smooth out the output from renewables when clouds come over or the wind dies down, store power for sale at peak times or high prices, or for night- time use, and even remove the need for new grid infrastructure. They can also provide a whole range of what are called “network services” – and providing frequency control and “synthetic inertia” are the top of that list. In all, there are about 2. Swiss army knife of the energy system. In practice, one installation may focus on only one or just a few of those pitons. Will it solve South Australia’s electricity problems? Some, but not all. It will provide much needed network support, so if there are more network failures, or if the big gas generators trip again like they did in March then battery storage will play a critical role in keeping the grid stable and the lights on, particularly with its fast response capabilities. It can respond to faults in an instant – in milliseconds – while the big gas generators are still asleep in the back of the bus. This could come from pumped hydro, solar thermal, and even hydrogen. Battery storage will likely remain the quickest to respond, and the cheapest over short periods, so will play a critical role. Would it have prevented the System Black? Possibly. The battery storage systems has been configured on what would have been required to ride through some of the events that happened last year, including the system black. That event threw up a whole bunch of issues, including the way the system was managed, the un- known fault ride through settings on wind farms, and the lax governor controls on the big gas and coal generators, and a bunch of other things. But work by Lloyds Register found that a battery of around 1. MW could have been sufficient to do the job of dealing with those sudden changes in frequency and voltage in those dramatic seconds when one tower after another collapsed and three major transmission lines failed. Whether the system would have been able to ride through the remaining issues is not known, but batteries would have given it a fighting chance. How will it change the energy market? Enormously. This is as significant as the start of the shift from analogue to digital, from a landline to a mobile, from film to digital photos, from switching from a manual gearbox to an automatic, or from a petrol car to an electric vehicle. It will change the way we think about energy, from the old baseload, peak load paradigm, to a new one based around the cheapest form of new generation “base cost renewables” (wind and solar), and then flexible or dispatchable generation to fill in the gaps. But storage will allow those penetrations to jump significantly. More importantly, it reduces the ability of the big fossil fuel generators to dominate the market and manipulate prices as they have. South Australia has paid dearly for this lack of competition for more than a decade, and the rest of the nation is starting to pay the price too, hence the huge rises in electricity bills. How is this battery storage array being configured? Of the 1. 00. MW/1. MWh in this array, around 7. MW of capacity is contracted to the South Australian government to provide grid stability and system security. It will likely mostly provide frequency and ancillary services (FCAS) when needed (such as a major system fault, generator trip or transmission failure). This part of the battery is designed to last 1. The other 3. 0MW of capacity will have three hours storage, and will be used as load shifting by Neoen for the Hornsdale wind farm, where it will be located. Please note: The 3. MW and 7. 0MW ratings mean exactly that – it is the capacity at the connection point. How much will it cost? Those details are confidential and media estimates have ranged from $5. The best indication may have come from Musk himself, who reportedly said that failure to meet the 1. US5. 0 million. But that refers only to the component contracted to the government, so the 7. MW part. So, it is likely to be a number less than $A1. What is South Australia’s contribution? We don’t know, but it did flag a sum of $1. Renewable Energy Technologies Fund when the tender was first announced. It is also the contract partner for the grid services, so presumably is making some payments for those. Weatherill has put the total cost to the government – grant and payments – at $5. Will it make money? Yes. Neoen’s strategy is for long term, low yield in investments, and this fits the bill. The battery storage plant being installed by Vector in Alice Springs – to double the amount of solar in what is already the country’s solar capital – will deliver a pay back in less than 5 years on the savings from reduced gas generation. And it is clear that solar and wind couple with storage is cheaper than gas power now. When will it be finished? The government wants it finished by December 1 and Tesla and Neoen have committed to doing that. Ironically, the 1. Australian Energy Market Operator. That will likely take a couple of months, so the December 1 deadline will fall before the 1. Will they reduce prices? Almost certainly. The existence of a new FCAS provider, contracted to the government, will lower FCAS prices, which have jumped sharply in recent years and added tens of millions to consumer bills. Weatherill puts it at $4. Now, a major new player will enter the FCAS market, so restricts the ability of the existing FCAS providers – the gas generators – from setting any price they want. Also, the introduction of a new player into the wholesale market – the 3. MW component – will have a dampening effect on prices. Not only is there a crucial new player in the market, but it doesn’t take that much to change prices. Really high prices are set when maybe a single, high cost generators sets the marginal cost. If the battery storage can shift that “bidding stack” to the left then it will reduce prices. Will there be more battery storage installations? Yes, but by whom and where is still not certain. A whole bunch of different people have projects – Zen Energy, Lyon Group, Carnegie Clean Energy, Reach Energy, but most will reassess their plans in the light of this, and see where their project fits in. We will see new storage in Victoria, a tender in Queensland, the 5. MW capacity in Alice Springs, and lots of behind the meter storage – in households – linked together as “virtual power plants” doing much the same thing as the Tesla battery. Sonnen, Reposit and AGL are doing this and others will surely follow. Why did Tesla win the tender? Probably because they offered the cheapest price, but not necessarily. Premier Weatherill said: “There were some great local bids and some exciting ideas but this was just head and shoulders above all the other bids in terms of price, reliability, capability of delivering by 1 December.”Renew. Economy understands that by partnering with Neoen, they could get access to a connection point which needed no further upgrade, and who were already working on connection points. And with Tesla and Elon Musk, you can’t buy this much publicity. You get the sense that the mainstream media would get excited if Musk announced the opening of an envelope. Look at the media interest a week earlier when Neoen announced the country’s biggest battery – 2. MW/3. 4MWh – to be built alongside a 1. The project, attracting $5. How long will the batteries last? Renew. Economy understands the batteries carry guarantees for 1. So, for instance, after 1. How many houses will it power? A common question, but an irrelevant one. Deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce says it is just one grain of sugar in a teaspoon. As we try to get our heads around that analogy, we should remember that if you have a flat tire, you don’t buy a new car. Peaking gas generators have long been designed to operate for just a few hours of the year. These batteries will have similarly specialised services. Much of the capacity will be used to provide system stability, and the rest to hedge the output of the wind farm and shift output from low to high demand. In the end, though, they are likely to operate every day, as opposed to only a few days a year for some peaking gas units. What happens when the wind doesn’t blow? As you can probably guess, last week’s episode of Game of Thrones—and its increasing dominance over the pop culture landscape—has filled the ol’ postman’s stolen mailbag to the brim. There are a few spoilers for last week’s episode, but more importantly, an answer to a question we should have been asking ourselves since the first episode: Should we want Daenerys and Jon Snow to fuck? Aunt, Man. Aaron W.: So I’ve been struggling with this question a lot: Is it ok to . So the aunt/nephew dynamic is an absolute deal breaker to modern audiences, but maybe wouldn’t be the worst thing in Westeros? This is the third book in a series over 25 years. In 1971, at the insistence of many people, particularly our college daughters, we wrote Handbook On Abortion. Greetings, my Westerosi window envelopes! As you can probably guess, last week’s episode of Game of Thrones—and its increasing dominance over the pop culture. This episode has more horror-movie elements than usual, as the team pokes around in an abandoned hotel looking for rats that have developed a taste for human flesh. Lots of reasons it would be good, but one BIG reason it is unacceptable. Thoughts? Shipping is. I’ve seen worse than aunt and nephew. And the show is definitely presenting them as future romantic partners/fuckbuddies, which makes it as legitimate as these things get. Their familial relationship may freak you out, but that’s sort of the point. GRRM wants to show a medieval, feudal- type era with all the awfulness most fantasies skip over. The relentless sexism, the rape and torture, the horror that regular people could and did experience constantly as the result of what the nobility chose to do—you can absolutely complain about how omnipresent it is in his stories and/or how it’s portrayed, but it’s not inaccurate to the source material of that reality. And one part of that reality is medieval (and certainly ancient) nobility’s tendency toward incest, especially between uncles and nieces—to the point where its got its own name, avunculate marriage. As you said, the books/show have already shown that Targaryens have been more than willing to marry within the family in order to keep their bloodline pure, so there’s a precedent for Jon and Dany starting a relationship. And since we’re talking about an aunt and nephew here (since Jon is the son of Dany’s deceased brother Rhaegar) and not uncle/niece, a Jon/Dany hook- up would. I am far more skeptical that Jon would be cool with sleeping with his aunt, given the rest of Westeros isn’t nearly as cool with incest (hence Cersei and Jaime’s hiding of their sexual relationship—well, until Cersei took the throne and decided that yes, in fact, as queen she gets to have sex with anyone she wants, and everyone else has to deal with it. Or be tortured and killed). But Jon’s problem is easily solved by keeping his parentage from him until after Ice and Fire have fucked each other. In fact, I suspect Bran is keeping/will keep the truth of Jon’s parentage from everyone until after Daenerys gets pregnant for that very reason. The Three- Eyed Raven knows this has to happen, so mum’s the word for now Or GRRM—or the show, for that matter, since we know it’s diverging from GRRM’s plan in major ways—could just throw a curveball and have Dany marry Gendry, the closest thing King Robert had to a legitimate heir, combining the Targaryen and Baratheon lines to create a progeny whose claim to the throne is unassailable throughout Westeros. Actually, that’s a pretty good idea! He’s way at the bottom . No way Bronn can hold his breath long enough to get down there, cut all the straps to all the pieces of the armor, pull them off, and then also pull him to safety before they both drown. I’m not going to say it’s unrealistic, since Jaime was pushed into the water to avoid a dragon, but the point of Game of Thrones is that it has fantasy elements but it’s still realistic in the basic laws of physics. So isn’t Jaime getting rescued impossible? You bring up a good point about fantasy, in that the best fantasy has a set of rules, even if the audience doesn’t know them, and doesn’t break them. Someone suddenly having a “hoist person out of lake” spell to save Jaime would be dumb. Tyrion running down the hell and begging Dany to have Drogon fish the dude who was about to kill her out of the lake is more realistic for Go. T, but implausible in terms of Dany’s character and the time it would take for Tyrion to get down to Dany and ask for her to save his brother. From Season 5, the program was aired on The WB. Crater then arrives, treating Kirk and McCoy with hostility, telling Kirk that the only thing they need are salt tablets. Otherwise, he and his wife want to be. So that leaves Bronn. Here’s one thing we all need to make our peace with first, right now: Game of Thrones the TV show has begun playing fast and loose with strict reality in favor of presenting the most exciting story possible. This is how armies and fleets are moving gargantuan distances in- between and sometimes even during episodes. It’s why Tyrion can pick out Jaime from half a mile away amid a battlefield full of smoke and destruction. It’s why Cersei and her allies can suddenly kick ass or all of Highgarden’s gold can get into King’s Landing with a mutter and a handwave. There are only nine episodes left, total, as of the time this mailbag hits the nerdernet. The show doesn’t have any time to waste. Yes, part of the reason the books are so good is because they were sprawling and complicated in the way life is, and yes, the show is 1. I also, as I mentioned in my recap this week, think it doesn’t make any narrative sense for Bronn to push Jaime out of the way of a giant cone of dragon breath into a lake, only to have him immediately drown—if Weiss and Benioff are going to kill the character, having Jaime get turned into cinders by Drogon is a much, much cooler death. So I think the show will forgo realism (I mean, how was that lake at the side of that road a full 3. Bronn will cut Jaime out of his armor and drag him to the surface (because Jaime is the one who’s going to give him a castle, after all), and the Lannister will probably live to fight another day. And I also think he’ll be the one to perform those (book spoilers) valonqar duties, and obviously, he can’t do that if he’s dead. Last time I looked, I didn’t see any friendly priests of R’hllor nearby. Where to even begin? Ser Barristan would have been the most solid member of Daenerys’ Queensguard due to military and combat experience, but his relationship to Rhaegar is most interesting. When Dany tells Jon that everyone loves doing what they’re best at, Jon disagrees. Ser Barristan once told Dany a similar story about her brother Rhaegar preferring singing in the street to killing. I also imagine Ser Barristan recognizing the late prince’s resemblance in Jon’s face, posture, or personality. Although Jon is very much Ned Stark in code and hair color, there would be a few opportunities for the show to make that connection. Are there any dead characters that would’ve enhanced the current story we have without breaking the series? Barristan had to die because he had too many answers. He knew Rhaegar well, and he likely knew what Rhaegar was doing when he kidnapped Lyanna, or at the very least he knew whether Lyanna was kidnapped or went with him willingly. Even though we know the result of their union was Jon Snow, the reason why Rhaegar kidnapped her, thus starting a chain of events that killed most of his family and ended their dynasty, is such an integral mystery that it’s going to need to be saved until the very end of the series. Barristan may well have had those answers. The show could get away with not acknowledging this for a bit, while he hadn’t been in Daenerys’ service for long and wasn’t completely trusted. When Dany realized that Barristan knew her family pretty intimately, and was beginning to ask questions about them—well, that’s when he had to go. Barristan literally died in the same episode he began to tell stories Rhaegar (“Sons of the Harpy,” episode five). So yes, Barristan would added a great deal to the proceedings, but would have added too much, too soon. My pick would be either Oberyn or Doran Martell, if only so one of them could make the Dorne storyline worth a damn. It would be cool so see Dorne have a major role to play in the great war other than serving as Cersei fodder. If a good Dorne storyline is off the table, I have to go Stannis, actually. Seeing him somehow bend the knee to Jon Snow and becoming part of the fight against the White Walkers would be really satisfying on a lot of levels, I think. But those are just mine—add and explain yours in the comments. Runnin’ Through My Veins. Sarah M.: Was the Scorpion spear poisoned? Is Drogon The Dragon going to die? I’m of two minds about this, although both of my reasons why are purely metatextual instead of having anything to do with the logic inside the show. Because inside the show, Cersei and Qyburn—both of whom really want these dragons dead and already have poison on their minds—should absolutely have poisoned the giant ballista bolt in an attempt to make it lethal even if it only caused a flesh wound. Now, would the poison work on the dragon? Is it powerful enough? Isn’t dragon blood probably hardcore enough to stop it? The reason I don’t think the spear was poisoned is because the show didn’t tell us it was poisoned. Certainly Game of Thrones has been content to present mysteries to the viewers that don’t get solved until later, but I don’t think the show or the showrunners want to or feel they can waste anymore time on anything that doesn’t hurtle us to the finale. Remember, at the time this mailbag is being published, there are only nine more episodes. There’s no time to be coy. Also, can you imagine how much more tense that battle would have been if we had known the spear was poisoned and Dany didn’t? That would have been very effective. The reason I think it might be poisoned is because it would take Drogon off the board for a while, which would even the odds between Dany and Cersei, and then for a chunk of the fight with the White Walkers. It’s the Justice League/Superman policy—you have to somehow keep Superman occupied until the very end, because otherwise he’d just beat the bad guy in the first five minutes. My call: Drogon is poisoned, like his namesake. But instead of just wasting away, he uses his final strength to crawl out of his cave and deliver a final, crushing blow to the White Walkers, which proves fatal to both them and the dragon. A sad Dany goes home and discovers a pile of dragon eggs where Drogon had been laying. BOOM. Miles Away. Apache (dance) - Wikipedia. Apache, or La Danse Apache, Bowery Waltz, Apache Turn, Apache Dance and Tough Dance is a highly dramatic dance associated in popular culture with Parisian street culture at the beginning of the 2. Top 2. 5 Horror Movies of All Time - IGNContinued from Page 1. George Romero practically created the zombie movie genre single- handedly in 1. Night of the Living Dead. Ten years later he refined the formula with Dawn of the Dead. Far bigger, gorier, and funnier than its predecessor, Dawn of the Dead remains Romero's definitive work. Whereas Night featured a small cast of survivors holed up in a remote farm house, Dawn opens with a glimpse of a major metropolitan area falling to chaos during the zombie outbreak. It isn't long before our four heroes are forced to leave town and barricade themselves inside a shopping mall. But as it turns out, the undead hordes still retain enough of their old selves to feel the need to shop and consume. The true brilliance of Dawn is how it combined straight- up zombie carnage with a healthy dose of satire and social commentary. At the end of the day, are modern Americans really so different from the shambling undead? They crave warm flesh; we crave i. Phones. A SWAT member even commits suicide after being forced to gun down an attacking zombie. By 1. 98. 4 the slasher movie had been done to death (excuse the pun). Just how many masked killers could you see before fatigue set in? But Wes Craven had a brilliant twist on these types of films. First, he created a killer, Freddy Krueger, who instantly stood out from the rest of the pack. His face was burned beyond recognition, but Freddy wore no mask and didn't stay silent. In fact, he had plenty of cruel taunts for his victims. More importantly, his domain was the dream world, where he could stalk and terrorize without any rules to bind him - - if you ran away from him, he could just as easily be waiting for you as you approached. There was nowhere to hide from Freddy because we all have to sleep sometime, right? Featuring a more down to Earth and relatable group of young characters than most slasher films, A Nightmare on Elm Street made a huge impact upon its release, thanks to its excellent conceit and amazing villain, and Craven's talent at building tension and delivering the goods in his murder scenes. And with Freddy, Craven gave us one of the most popular, durable and recognizable movie characters of all time. Scene to watch with the lights on: When Freddy gets a hold of Tina in her dream, we suddenly realize just how big the stakes are, as her sleeping body is pulled up into the air, and four fatal cuts rip into her. The fact that she's dragged along the ceiling, screaming, before she dies, as her boyfriend looks on in horror, only adds to the shock of the scene. When American horror movies began to stagnate in the 1. Hollywood began looking at Asian cinema for new ways to scare the pants off viewers. Ring emerged as one of the best efforts in Japan's growing horror lineup, so it was only natural that Dream. Works chose to remake it as 2. The Ring. The concept for The Ring is simple and effective. An unsuspecting viewer watches a tape full of creepy imagery and a creepier girl. One week later, they're found dead from sinister but mysterious causes. And when our lovely heroine becomes the latest viewer, she has only days to save herself and her family from this deadly curse. The Ring is one damned creepy movie, and that's why it's so effective. Director Gore Verbinski loads his adaptation with plenty of haunting imagery even while the tension seems always just at the boiling point. Even hardcore fans of the original were pleased to see The Ring diverge from the source material in some ways and take full advantage of its larger budget. Hollywood hasn't always found success in mimicking Japan's horror gems, but they certainly hit gold with The Ring. Scene to watch with the lights on: It's tempting to list the final encounter between the undead Samara and Noah as the scariest moment in The Ring. After all, nobody likes seeing a ghostly girl crawling out of their television set. But it's an earlier scene in the film that left us most unsettled - - watching that frakkin' videotape! David Cronenberg's very R- rated, very intense and very excellent remake of The Fly puts Jeff Goldblum in the role of Seth Brundle, a scientist who invents telepods meant to change the world. Instead, they change him into a man- fly monster when a fly accidentally gets trapped in one of the machines as Seth teleports from one pod to the other. The script, performances and Howard Shore's tremendous score work together to create a horror opera, one full of dark twists and practical creature effects scares. Once all the gore and vomiting- on- food- to- eat- it settles, we realize we've just watched a tragedy about a scientist who accounted for everything save nature finding a way to remind man not to play God. This house may now be . Just pick anything. How about the guy who tears his own face apart or the malicious clown doll that loves to strangle or the vengeful zombies coming out of the swimming pool? This movie will hit you from every direction and leave you cowering in the corner. An alien with the ability to take the form of any life that it absorbs infiltrates an Antarctic research base, and soon the 1. John Carpenter's best film has itself planted on either side of the horror and sci- fi movie lines. The Thing plays fair within both genres, but leans more toward horror. The movie takes it time setting up the rules of the creature living amongst our heroes, while more importantly establishing each character - - from Windows to Mac. Ready to Mac. Ready's beard - - as people we actually worry about. Such attention to character and pacing feels like a lost art at times in the current genre climate. The practical special effects hold up better than you'd think (save for the stop- motion Blairmonster), and Kurt Russell gives one of his best performances as team leader Mac. Ready. Any self- respecting movie fan should have this in their library. Scene to watch with the lights on: Sure, your eyes will scream like a little girl when the head of a victim sheers itself from its burning corpse and spider- walks away. But the scariest bit involves the Thing assimilating dogs and revealing a mouth (best described as a flower made out of tongue petals) moments before it slime- claws its way out of sight. Psycho can be seen as the film that birthed the slasher genre and Texas Chainsaw Massacre was an integral step in its progress, making things more visceral. But it was Halloween that truly defined this subgenre in horror, inspiring a million sequels, rip- offs, imitations and homages. Take an instantly identifiable holiday, add in a chillingly silent, unstoppable masked killer and a feisty, resourceful heroine and you have Halloween.. It's no wonder Michael became a horror icon and that fans rebelled when he didn't appear in Halloween III. After all, Michael Myers and Halloween - - both the film and the actual holiday - - are now forever intertwined. Scene to watch with the lights on: Laurie Strode is trying to hide from Michael Myers, and crouches down inside a closet. She manages to tie the door shut, but that's not going to stop Michael, who begins smashing the door in, causing light to shine in and for Michael's spooky mask to come into plain view of the understandably terrified Laurie. In 1. 96. 8, director George Romero took the frightening idea of . Sure, some films have made their zombies run fast and tried to explain the whole dead- alive deal with a virus, and that's all fine. But nothing will ever beat the basics. With this one film, Romero was able to tap into everything we're afraid of: death, desecration of the flesh, cannibalism, brainwashing, disease and hopelessness. There's also a stinging underlying social message about racism, media and paranoia where viewers got to learn that they could be just as dangerous and cruel as the mindless hordes of undead they were hiding from. Scene to watch with the lights on: The scene when the mother discovers her little daughter, Karen, down in the basement, eating her own father for lunch. That's right. Sadako’s Secrets: Explaining “Ringu” at the Asian Art Museum. By Mark Frey (Kumamoto, 2. Ever wonder about the real back story of the legendary Japanese horror film, Ringu? In Summer of 2. 01. JET alum Mark Frey (Kumamoto, 2. Ringu, and its American remake, The Ring, at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. In preparing for the lectures, he discovered that the movies, though modern in their presentation, were drawing from centuries of Japanese cultural history, including some of the country’s oldest and most gruesome ghost stories. In the following article, Mark shares some of his more interesting and unsettling discoveries. I remember because the strange story in the movie was mirroring my own situation on JET a little too closely. I was living in the mountains of Aso, in the middle of Kyushu. For Halloween, I had the bright idea of organizing a sleepover for some friends further up in the mountains. These were the same dark mountains where tengu goblins and other awful things were rumored to still run around. I’m embarrassed to say that it was long enough ago that videotapes were still in general use. So after a few hours of costumed revelry, we turned off the lights and put the Ringu videotape into the VCR. Soon we were watching some truly creepy happenings. At one point we were watching someone watching a cursed videotape in a cabin in some dark mountains that looked all too eerily like our own cabin. After watching some of the more disturbing images I’ve seen in my life, I slipped into my futon feeling a little unsettled. Right then my phone started ringing. I almost jumped out of my bed. I answered the phone. So imagine my feeling when the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco called me in the summer of 2. I might not only watch Ringu again, but analyze it closely and give a couple lectures introducing it and its American remake, The Ring, at a pair of screenings they were hosting later that year in August and September. The nightmare was coming back. I was also very flattered. The museum asked me to give these lectures based on the work I have been doing for JETAANC Kabuki Club, an open study group I started a few years ago to explore Japanese performing arts. In particular, the museum was interested in a series of classes I had led focusing on the Noh, Kabuki, Butoh, and chamber opera versions of two Japanese ghost stories, Sumidagawa and The Black Mound(Kurozuka). The museum thought these classes related nicely to their Ringu screenings, which it was mounting as part of its “Phantoms of Asia” exhibition. The exhibition centered on a wide range of Asian art relating to ghosts and the supernatural, and so Ringu seemed like a perfect fit. I discussed the content of the lectures with the museum’s Manager of Public Programs, Allison Wyckoff. We decided that it might be interesting to present the audience with an overview of the traditions of Japanese art and film that the creators of Ringu were borrowing from when they made the movie. In preparing for the lectures, I was surprised by many things. In the course of my research for Kabuki Club, I had discovered many unexpected things about Japanese culture and history. I suspected I would find equally unexpected things if I delved deep enough into the historical and cultural background of Ringu. I wasn’t wrong. My research, which drew from wide- ranging sources, suggested that Ringu was, in fact, drawing from long- standing traditions in Japanese art and film history, stretching back hundreds of years. I thought that alumni and friends might also be interested in what I found, and so I am presenting some of my findings below. It’s my hope that they spark some food for thought when you next see these movies–maybe in a dark cabin in the Sierras?–making them more than just incredibly scary movies. Which, of course, they are.**Spoiler alert** I will try not to give away any more of the story of Ringu than I have to. But there may be some spoilers in what follows, be forewarned! Sadako as Pop Icon. As some of you might remember, Ringu came out in Japan in 1. DVDs and digital media took over the media landscape. We all remember that if you wanted to watch a movie at home, you had to use a VCR. This, of course, is central to the story of Ringu. Sadako, the vengeful spirit at the center of the story, propagates her curse through videotapes. I suppose today, she would use a viral video on You. Tube to curse her victims. In fact, this is the updated conceit of Sadako 3. D, one of the many sequels to Ringu. Altogether, Ringu has spawned three sequels, one prequel, one Korean remake, and two Hollywood remakes, with another (the Hollywood remake of Sadako 3. D) on the way. What is more, Ringu kicked off a rebirth of the Japanese horror film as a genre, spawning a whole series of “J- horror” movies, most of which were remade by Hollywood, including Juon (The Grudge), Kairo (Pulse), Chakushin ari (One Missed Call), and Honogurai mizu no soko kara (Dark Water), along with all of their sequels. Vengeful Japanese spirits became big business. They also became celebrities. Sadako, the ghost in Ringu, has become a pop icon in Japanese culture, much like Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street movies or Jigsaw from the SAW movies in America. Evidence of this is Sadako’s first pitch at a Marines vs Nippon Ham Fighters baseball game in 2. Sadako and the Dance of Darkness. Fans of the movie may not realize that Sadako’s appearance and movements were inspired in part by Butoh, a strange, grotesque dance form created in Japan after the horrors of World War II. Click here to see one of the original Butoh dancers, Ohno Kazuo perform a Sadako- like dance, The Dead Sea. Here is the founder of Butoh, Tatsumi Hijikata, in a pose that is evocative of Sadako’s disturbing appearance: Hijikata. Sadako’s Ghostly Ancestors. Sadako’s appearance in the movie is initially shocking and unexpected. But she is actually drawing from a long history of Japanese ghosts. In particular, she shares many characteristics with classic yuurei ghosts. Yuurei are usually women with a white face, long black hair, and a long white kimono that trails off into mist where her legs should be. There is a simple reason for this appearance: this is how Japanese women looked when they were buried. Traditionally, Japanese women wore their hair tied up while living, but it was let down when they died. The body is dressed in a white kimono to show the purity of the person’s soul. The misty legs show that it is a spirit. Here are some famous yuurei ghosts from the history of Japanese art: A famous example of a Japanese yuurei ghost who fits the general pattern is Okiku, from one of the most famous ghost stories, “Bancho Sarayashi.” Here is Yoshitoshi’s famous rendition of Okiku in the middle painting: Okiku was a servant at the famous Himeji Castle in western Japan. A samurai tried to seduce her, but she spurned his advances. Enraged, he killed her and threw her into a water well. Okiku’s ghost haunts the well even today. Here is the actual well, which some of you may have seen while visiting the castle on JET: Do you see the iron bars over it? Is that to keep us out? Or is it to keep Okiku in?: The Well as a Symbol. There are a lot of stories in Japan about people dumping bodies into wells or about women committing suicide by throwing themselves into wells. Often, the stories involve men dumping a woman’s body into the well, such as happened to Okiku. In the case where the woman is trying to kill herself, it’s usually because of “man” troubles. So there is deep connection in Japanese culture between wells and troubled women. The well itself as an object and place plays a very important role in Ringu. Because of it’s shape and character as a deep, dark, wet place, those with a Freudian bent could see it as a “yonic” symbol of female power. As such, it may be a locus of fear and wonder for men. Whether you subscribe to these ideas or not, it cannot be denied that the well symbol has cropped up in many Japanese horror movies over the years. All of these movies are about sinister women ghosts. So might there not be a cultural archetype lurking here? To illustrate my point, take a look at a few more examples from Japanese movies. This still is of the woman ghost in Onibaba, Kaneto Shindo’s classic horror movie from the 1. In what is the reverse of what happens to Sadako, the ghost in Onibaba attacks men who pass by and throws them into a deep, dark, round hole: Onibaba is based on a very old Japanese folktale called “The Black Mound” (Kurozuka, alternatively Adachigahara). As I mentioned before, JETAANC Kabuki Club explored the story as part of its “Black Mound Project” in 2. Another deep, dark, round hole: What is more, wells hold water, which can also be a scary thing to many Japanese. Many Japanese believe that water is the pathway to the land of the dead. Water is used in Ringu and many other Japanese horror films to create an instantly spooky atmosphere for Japanese audiences. Sadako on Celluloid. As an unholy spirit, Sadako shares many characteristic with ghosts that have appeared in Japanese horror movies over the years. Take a look at some of the patterns yourself: Oiwa: Proto- Sadako? Returning to Japanese folk tales, Sadako also has a lot in common with Oiwa, probably the most famous yuurei ghost in Japanese history: Her story, usually called “Yotsuya Kaidan,” has been retold countless times in as many media, including Kabuki plays, manga, anime, and numerous movies. Like Okiku, Oiwa has a sad story. Her husband poisoned and killed her so that he could go off and marry another woman. Adding insult to injury, he nailed Oiwa to a door and dumped her into the river. In the Kabuki version, Oiwa brushes her long black hair. We can’t see her face. Soon, she is brushing out bloody clumps of hair, never a good sign. Deccan Chronicle - Latest India news. While the first half appears lively, the second half looks more like a documentary on Punjab, its art and culture than a movie. There is a need to trim the movie by at least 3. What could have been a lively romantic story has been reduced to a pathetic narration by director Shekhar who has failed to do justice to the story as well as the audiences. Except for some lively moments in the first half, thanks to brilliant performance by Diganth, the rest of the movie tests your patience with unwanted sequences, especially in the second half, that could have been done away with. It is a simple story. Santhosh (Diganth) falls in love with Khushi (Bhama), a resident of Punjab, through internet. He decides to meet her for a day in Punjab on his way to the US. He is impressed by her and her family members. The story takes a curious turn when Santhosh loses contact with Khushi after leaving her. Khushi is depressed as she does not get any response to her messages from Santhosh. She falls sick and gets admitted to hospital. Only her father (Suchendra Prasad) knows what happened to Santhosh. If you have patience and time, you can stay till the climax. Diganth gets full marks for his lively performance. Bhama looks dull for a strong character that could have pepped up the story. Music By Arjun Janya has some catchy numbers. Camera work by Gundlupet Suresh is commendable. Amrapali Dubey Biography, Career profile, Husband Name, Personal Details, Hit Movie’s.
